What Wood We Collect

At A&A Recycling Services Ltd., we specialise in collecting and processing waste wood, ensuring it is repurposed sustainably in line with the principles of the circular economy. As part of the A.W. Jenkinson Group, we handle significant volumes of wood waste, diverting it from landfill and maximising its potential for reuse in various industries. 

We collect and process three main grades of waste wood: Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C, each with distinct characteristics and applications. It's worth noting that waste wood classification systems may vary slightly between different regions or organisations, so it's essential to refer to local regulations or industry guidelines for specific definitions and requirements in a particular area.  

Wood recycling types we accept

Grade A – Clean, Untreated Wood

Sources: 

  • Pre-consumer waste from manufacturing, distribution, retail, and packaging
  • Joinery and pallet reclamation
  • Wooden packaging, such as pallets, crates, packing cases, and cable drums 

Acceptable Materials: 

  • Solid softwood and hardwood
  • Unpainted and untreated timber offcuts
  • Wooden pallets and packaging waste 

Non-Wood Contaminants: 

  • Minor amounts of nails and metal fixings
  • Small traces of non-hazardous coatings (e.g., water-soluble paint) 

Uses: 
Grade A wood is primarily used for animal bedding, panel board production, and biomass fuel. It must be clean and free from treatments, making it ideal for high-quality recycled wood products. 

Grade B – Treated, Non-Hazardous Wood

Sources: 

  • Everything in Grade A, plus construction and demolition sites, skip operators, and transfer stations
  • Domestic solid wooden furniture 

Acceptable Materials: 

  • All soft and hardwood waste
  • Wooden pallets, crates, and boxes
  • Timber offcuts from construction
  • Painted solid wood (e.g., window frames, doors with glass removed) 

Non-Wood Contaminants: 

  • Nails and metal fixings
  • Some paints, plastics, grit, and non-hazardous coatings 

Uses: 
Grade B wood is suitable for biomass fuel and panel board production, provided it remains primarily wood-based with no more than 10% panel products such as MDF, plywood, or chipboard. 

Grade C – Mixed Waste Wood (Municipal and Industrial)

Sources: 

  • Everything in Grade A and B, plus municipal collections and household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) 

Acceptable Materials: 

  • All soft and hardwood waste
  • Pallets, timber offcuts, crates, and solid wooden doors
  • Painted wood, window frames, and DIY materials
  • High-content panel products such as chipboard, MDF, and plywood 

Non-Wood Contaminants: 

  • Nails, metal fixings, and plastic components
  • Paper, coatings, rubber, and some glues 

Uses: 
Grade C wood is primarily processed for biomass energy recovery, helping to reduce landfill waste and contribute to renewable energy solutions. 

What We Cannot Accept (Grade D – Hazardous Waste Wood)

 A&A Recycling does not accept Grade D hazardous wood, which includes: 

  • Railway sleepers, telegraph poles, and agricultural fencing
  • Wood treated with copper chrome arsenic (CCA) or creosote
  • Pre-2007 building materials such as soffit boards, roof timbers, and external joinery 

These materials must be segregated and sent to specialised hazardous waste facilities.
