Grade A

Grade A waste wood, also known as pre-consumer waste wood, consists of clean, untreated solid softwood and hardwood. It includes various types of wood waste, such as packaging materials like pallets, packing cases, and cable drums, as well as process offcuts from the production of virgin timber and untreated boards. Prior to processing, Grade A waste wood may have minimal amounts of non-hazardous surface coatings and nails.

Grade A waste wood is sourced from industries involved in wood product manufacturing, distribution, retailing, packaging, and secondary manufacture. It originates from activities such as manufacturing furniture, doors, and windows, as well as the distribution and retailing of wooden packaging materials. Joinery and pallet reclamation processes also contribute to the Grade A waste wood stream.

Grade A waste wood serves various purposes and opens up market opportunities. Some common applications include:

  1. Animal Bedding: The clean and untreated nature of Grade A waste wood makes it an ideal material for animal bedding. It provides a comfortable and absorbent surface for livestock and pets, while being environmentally friendly.
  2. Equine and Landscaping Surfacing: Processed into wood chips or mulch, Grade A waste wood is used in equestrian arenas, playgrounds, and landscaping projects. It offers effective ground cover, moisture retention, and weed suppression.
  3. Biomass Fuel: Grade A waste wood can be used as a fuel source in biomass installations for both domestic and non-IED Chapter IV settings. It serves as a renewable and eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels.
  4. Pellet and Briquette Production: Manufacturers use Grade A waste wood to produce wood pellets and briquettes. These products are widely used as efficient and sustainable fuel sources.
